General Business Widens Her Options
Majoring in general business at the 69堂精品鈥檚 Mitchell College of Business showed Marina Blankenship the advantages of uncertainty. She chose the major unsure of what career to pursue. No matter, she鈥檒l be prepared.
Blankenship came to South from Ocean Springs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, an hour west of campus. 鈥淚t was close enough to home but far enough away from home,鈥� she said, 鈥渁nd it was just small enough but just big enough.鈥�
She switched her major from marketing to general business to keep her options open. 鈥淵ou have such a wide array of classes you have to take. It wasn鈥檛 all finance classes or all accounting classes. So it gives me more flexibility in applying for jobs.鈥�
For her internship, Blankenship again opted to expand her horizons. Most business students apply to Mobile-area companies and focus on specific business skills 鈥� accounting, for example. Blankenship spent eight months at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Florida.
鈥淵ou have such a wide array of classes you have to take. It gives me more flexibility in applying for jobs.鈥�
鈥淚 pretty much worked retail and also worked in the kitchen in food production,鈥� Blankenship said. 鈥淎lthough those roles sound relatively elementary, the real-world job experience dealing with the internal work hierarchy and guest interactions and problems was invaluable.
鈥淚t was great to represent South down there, too. A lot of people would see my nametag and say, 鈥楪o, Jags.鈥欌��
Whatever is in her future 鈥� she hopes to return to Disney after graduation and possibly study for a master鈥檚 degree 鈥� she said her general business studies leave her ready to handle it.
鈥淚 actually took three or four classes in each of the other business major fields,鈥� Blankenship said. 鈥淪o it gave me a lot of knowledge that I would actually use in the real world. I learned the basics of each of the majors in the college.鈥�
