Engineering Student Follows Parents to South, After a Detour

Anna Salazar

With both parents being 69堂精品 engineering graduates, Mobile native Anna Salazar would obviously follow their footsteps, right?

Not exactly. First, when she was little, she said she would never be an engineer because she hated subtraction.

By college age, she had changed her mind. She studied biomedical engineering for two years 鈥 at another school. Then she transferred to South and switched majors to electrical engineering, her father鈥檚 field. (He鈥檚 originally from Costa Rica. Her mother, a U.S. native, is a chemical engineer.)

鈥淚 fell in love with South,鈥 Salazar said. The reason: her professors. 鈥淣ot only are they good teachers, but they really give their time and effort to the students. They鈥檙e easy to approach and just eager to help.鈥

鈥淔or several weeks we were there from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. getting the lights on. It was really amazing to be a part of.鈥

Salazar has worked for Alabama Power as part of the 69堂精品 Engineering Cooperative Education Program, which gives students a chance for a permanent job upon graduation. Co-op students alternate semesters of class work with semesters of full-time paid employment.

During her first Alabama Power semester in fall 2020, hurricanes Sally and Zeta ripped down miles of power lines. Salazar helped dispatch out-of-town and out-of-state repair crews.

鈥淔or several weeks we were there from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. getting the lights on,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was really amazing to be a part of.鈥

At South, she was chapter vice president for the international engineering honor society and was involved in other student organizations.

鈥淵ou learn a lot of valuable skills that you don鈥檛 learn in the classroom,鈥 she said, 鈥渟uch as organizing people with different schedules and leading meetings. Little things like that have definitely translated to work.鈥

Did You Know?

  • Students get plugged into undergraduate research. For example, undergraduate students designed and built a complete working satellite for delivery to NASA.
  • Many students participate in internships or co-op programs working for local companies, such as Alabama Power, Austal 69堂精品 and Airbus.
  • The major offers a pre-med track for students interested in healthcare fields.
